Bill Kemper Part Two
Any attempts to continue daily life like there wasnât some demonic cold-blooded entity out to destroy the whole fucking country was put to bed after Poppy Reedâs TV meltdown and Stefano Bello butchering of his teammates in the middle of a televised football match.
The Rot had strategically struck. It had shown the people of the frightened land they couldnât escape its grasp. Its stranglehold on life had tightened. Your status, your position, your wealth and fortune didnât matter; the Rot could reach you, and destroy you.
Even if the force didnât inhabit you, the Rot could still take your life. It killed a talk show host live on air, and stomped a referee to death in the middle of a packed stadium. It was unstoppable. It had been feared before these incidents, but now it was like the Devil roamed the country in plain sight.
Worse for many, the Rot had shown you couldnât bury your head in the sand in the form of escapist entertainment anymore. You couldnât ignore it and hope it magically disappeared while you kept yourself distracted in the meantime. All film sets and TV tapings had been put on hold. Cinemas were closed, and all gigs were cancelled. Clubs were ordered to shut their doors despite being defiant until the very end, even after several high profile incidents.
Many shops were still open for the time being, but anything where a large crowd could assemble was either closed, or in the process of being shut down. Even the supermarkets now only allowed a limited number of shoppers at any one time. Everything was being managed and regulated.
Hysteria was taking over, and many thought it for the better. A perceived over-reaction was at least a reaction. A step towards some measure of safety. But for many, it wasnât an over-reaction, it was a necessity. The death toll was adding up.
All sporting events had been suspended until further notice. Not just the dizzying heights of the premier league and its equivalents, but grass root level as well. Sunday leagues had been postponed and sports halls were closed to the public. Gyms and swimming pools shut their doors as well, the equipment and environment considered too dangerous. Too high risk, which was becoming a buzzword for what was happening.
No one could pretend everything was going to be okay any longer; it was pretty fucking far from okay. The country had been brought to its knees, and royally fucked in the ass.
Some people stood firm. They believed taking away the football and forms of entertainment was letting the Rot win. That closing down shops, restaurants, gyms and clubs was an unnecessary step. They tried to remind those in charge that the Rot could appear anywhere. Essentially locking people in their homes didnât improve anyoneâs survival chances. The Rot didnât give a fuck about location.
But the battle-cry fell on deaf ears, especially from those providing the entertainment.
The stars and professionals had witnessed Poppy Reedâs actions, as somehow the feed hadnât been cut.
